Friday Harbor周五港
Friday Harbor is a column from the Humanistic GIS Laboratory, edited by Bo Zhao. The name takes two layers — first, the University of Washington's marine field station on San Juan Island, north of Seattle; second, and more to the point: the 1993 Friday Harbor meeting held there, the first sit-down between GIS scientists and critical social theorists, the moment that opened the social turn in geographic information science. This column continues that conversation.

If AI Takes Over Mapping, What Is Left for Humans?
From mapping to GIS and GeoAI, many cartographic abilities are being taken up by technology. The more capable the tools become, the more clearly human judgment matters.

Hartshorne, Schaefer, and the Question GeoAI Cannot Escape Hartshorne、Schaefer 与 GeoAI 无法逃避的问题
The 1950s debate over regional synthesis and spatial law reorganized geography around explanation and training. In the AI era, GeoAI raises the same question again: how can models change geography without replacing geographic judgment?

AI Capital Becomes Infrastructure AI
The money appears to chase models, but it settles into chips, clouds, data centers, power systems, and sovereign industrial capacity.

The Redrawn House
Five states quietly redrew their congressional maps mid-decade — chasing roughly seven seats in a chamber decided by three. Texas, North Carolina, and California, side by side, before and after.

A Century of Anglo-American Human Geography
Ron Johnston and James Sidaway's Geography and Geographers chronicled the field across seven editions; the streamgraph extends the frame to a century and threads in the world events that pulled each turn into being — from the Depression and WWII to '68, the oil shock, the Berlin Wall, 9/11, the 2008 crisis, and COVID.

Mackinder, Redrawn
In 1904 Halford Mackinder gave the world a map of pivots and crescents. A century later the locks of power aren't where he drew them. They're a dozen chokepoints — most of them on Spykman's coastal rim. A different geography.
